RICHARD LAERMER

A frequently-quoted authority on media culture and hype, Richard Laermer is a former magazine and newspaper journalist, the author of five bestselling books including Punk Marketing, and co-host of TLC’s Taking Care of Business.
Laermer first worked as a reporter beginning in 1979 and his columns, reporting and reviews have been published in The New York Times, New York Daily News, Reuters, USA Today, People magazine, Saturday Review, US Weekly, Interview, New York Post, Rolling Stone, Soho Weekly News, and Editor & Publisher, among others.
Laermer founded RLM Public Relations in 1991 when he recognized companies’ increasing need for effective media representation. He saw clearly how publicists were not grasping the intricacies of their clients’ businesses. With many years’ experience as a journalist, Laermer understood how to deliver results for his clients while respecting the demands placed on overburdened reporters. Over the past decade, RLM has gotten results for its clients by capitalizing on current and emerging trends.
Laermer’s books include trendSpotting (Penguin), published in 2002, which has been described as “an invaluable trend reference guide” for the new millennium. Laermer’s Native’s Guide to New York guidebook series (Norton) has sold over 70,000 copies and is in its fifth edition. His other books include Bargain Hunting in Greater New York (Prima) and Get on with It (Broadway).
His books have been reviewed and featured on the Today Show, CBS Sunday Morning, CNN, National Public Radio’s Marketplace, CNBC, American Airlines’ “Eye on American,” and Fox’s Good Day New York. His segment, “Unspun,” is a regular feature on NY1 and his columns on the PR business appear in Advertising Age, Adweek and PR News.
