SUSAN BLUMENTHAL
FORMER ASSISTANT SURGEON GENERAL
Rear Admiral Susan J. Blumenthal, MD, MPA, is an internationally recognized expert and leader on global health, who until recently served as US Assistant Surgeon General and Senior Global Health and E-Health Advisor in the US Department of Health and Human Services. She has been a major force in bringing important public health issues, including global health, women’s health, and mental illness, to scientific and public attention, helping to place them at the top of our nation’s healthcare agenda. She has also been a leader in the response to emerging disease threats including bioterrorism and pandemic flu.
Dr. Blumenthal served as co-chair and was responsible for the coordination and implementation of the National Action Plan for Breast Cancer, a presidential initiative that helped catalyze further action in the fight against breast cancer. She is currently a clinical professor at the Georgetown School of Medicine and Tufts University Medical Center, and a Distinguished Visiting Professor of Women’s Studies at Brandeis University. She also serves as Distinguished Advisor on Health, Science, and Medicine at the Center for the Study of the Presidency where she is leading the health initiative for 2008. Dr. Blumenthal has served as the medical director and host of several health television and film series and as the health columnist for magazines. She has received numerous awards including honorary doctorates for her landmark contributions in improving health. Dr. Blumenthal brings her audiences examples of her firsthand experience in the federal government, and of how health issues are handled at the national and global levels. She also discusses current issues facing women’s health, the response to pandemic flu, and healthcare reform.
