ARTHUR ESCH
EMERGING TECHNOLOGIES
Arthur Esch is an educator, author, columnist and advisor to association and companies worldwide. His book, Revenge of the Suits, is an entertaining dictionary for people in all walks of life. He brings to his writings and speeches a relaxed, non-technical approach to education. His audiences consistently report, “I learned more today than I have in years.”
Esch is known as the father of Desktop News. Working with NBC and IBM, he built the first digital television award network, NBC Desktop News. This digitalservice creates a unique newscast for each person in the audience.
A true technology pioneer, Esch has been awarded two United States patents that have been registered globally for Video Information Network and Multiple Media Delivery Network. These patents define the broadcast delivery of multimedia in site specific networks, the fundamental architecture for electronic publishing in the 21st century.
After graduating from the Pennsylvania State University, Esch served in the U.S. Navy, and was an early employee of Electronic Data Systems where he was a Systems Engineer. In the 1970s, he collaborated in creating a transaction processing system. That product ultimately became one of the most installed applications in the history of mainframe computers.
In the early 1980s, he helped lead an international team that launched one of the first information superhighways. Multimedia content was broadcast over satellite and delivered the last mile to homes using cable television. In the home, subscribers used the first fully automated cable television station. Ultimately the cable industry created an entire business around the use of computers to provide local origination channels.
Today, Esch advises clients worldwide on operating multimedia networks, digital publishing, and the successful implementation of electronic commerce networks. Carole and Arthur Esch have six children and three grandchildren. They make their home on the Chesapeake Bay.
