STEVE KELLEY
POLITICAL HUMORIST
Steve Kelley, speaker and political cartoonist, has devoted his attention to public officials, the way the radiator grille of a tractor-trailer might devote its attention to June bugs for the past two decades. He has delighted readers by consistently consigning office holders to the one fate they fear most: that of not being taken seriously.
A Virginia native, Kelley began his career in San Diego after graduating with honors from Dartmouth College, where he majored in English. His cartoons have won dozens of awards, including 6 first-place finishes in the California Newspaper Association’s annual statewide competition. In 2001, he won both the first- and second-place awards from CNPA, as well as Best Editorial Cartoon from the Los Angeles Press Club, and the National Headliner Award.
In 2002, Kelley relocated to become the resident political cartoonist for The New Orleans Times-Picayune. A popular speaker, humorist, and a veteran of 7 appearances on The Tonight Show, he has given much of his time and talent to charity.
Funny Money, which he co-created, provided funding for the San Diego Child Abuse Prevention Foundation for seven consecutive years. In 2001, Steve Kelley created 1000 Laughs for 1000 Smiles to raise money for reconstructive surgery on cleft palates of Indian children in Mexico.
