BERNADINE HEALY

A professor of internal medicine and the dean of the College of Medicine at Ohio State University, Dr. Healy is the immediate-past director of the National Institutes of Health. She has held a number of academic, civil and political positions during her distinguished career and has greatly influenced our nation’s healthcare policies and research. Also serving as the editor-in-chief of The Journal of Women’s Health, she published A New Prescription for Women’s Health in 1995.

Dr. Bernadine Healy is the dean of the College of Medicine and professor of Internal Medicine at the Ohio State University. During her distinguished career, she has served in many professional, academic and civil positions that have enabled her to influence our nation’s healthcare policies and research. She possesses a rare combination of experiences and skills, and has received much praise for her work.

She is the immediate-past director of the National Institutes of Health (NIH). Appointed by President Bush in January 1991, she spearheaded a number of successful projects and initiatives during her tenure at the agency. These efforts include establishing the Shannon Awards, grants designed to foster creative, innovative approaches in biomedical research within a highly competitive grant system during funding lapses; overseeing the elevation of nursing to an Institute for Nursing Research; and establishing a major intramural laboratory for human genetics at NIH. Dr. Healy also launched the NIH Women’s Health Initiative, a $625 million effort to study the causes, prevention and cures of disease that affect women.
Prior to her appointment at NIH, Dr. Healy was Chairman of the Research Institute of the Cleveland Clinic Foundation. The Research Institute more than doubled in size during her tenure, and expanded into newly built research facilities. From 1985 to the present, she has been a member of the Staff of the Cleveland Clinic, where she now serves in an adjunct role.

In February 1984, President Reagan appointed her Deputy Director of the Office of Science and Technology Policy at the White House. She served as Chairman of the White House Cabinet Working Group on Biotechnology, was Executive Secretary of the White House Science Council’s Panel on the Health of Universities and served as a member of several advisory groups.
From 1976 until 1984, she was on the faculty of The Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine and Hospital, where she was Professor of Medicine and Cardiology, and Director of the Coronary Care Unit. Dr. Healy also served as Assistant Dean for Post-Doctoral Programs and Faculty Development in the Medical School. Her other professional affiliations include serving as President of the American Heart Association in 1988-89. As President of the Heart Association, she initiated a Women and Minorities Leadership Task Force and a Women and Heart Disease Program that took hold in affiliates nationwide.

Dr. Healy is currently a member of the Board of Trustees of the Hudson Institute in Indianapolis, the Battelle Memorial Institute in Columbus, and The Brookings Institution in Washington, DC. She also sits on several corporate boards.

She is editor-in-chief of the Journal of Women’s Health and on the Editorial Board of Circulation. Her book, A New Prescription for Women’s Health, was published in 1995. She served as Chairman of the Advisory Panel for New Developments in Biotechnology of the Office of Technology Assessment of the U.S. Congress, and has been active in several Federal Advisory groups.

In recognition of her accomplishments, Dr. Healy has received many distinguished awards for her work. She has also received numerous honorary degrees.
A native of New York City, Bernadine Healy received her bachelor’s degree from Vassar College in 1965, and her M.D. from Harvard Medical School in 1970. She has also completed postgraduate training in internal medicine and cardiology at The Johns Hopkins School of Medicine.
