JANET EVANS
Janet Evans is a four time Olympic Gold Medalist and is considered America’s all-time female distance swimmer. She is the winner of 45 U.S. National Titles and the only female swimmer to hold three World records concurrently: 400m freestyle, 800m freestyle and 1500m freestyle. She is also the holder of six American records: 400, 500, 800, 1000, 1500 and 1650m freestyle. She participated in the 1988, 1992, and 1996 Olympic Games. In 1992, she was the gold medalist in the 800m freestyle and silver medalist in the 400m freestyle at the Olympics in Barcelona. In 1988, she was the gold medalist in the 400 and 800m freestyle and the 400m individual medley at the Olympics in Seoul
Evans has been honored by a variety of organizations for her abilities. These honors include: 1997, American Diabetes Association Honorary Chairperson; 1996, Selected as final Olympic Torch runner at Centennial Olympic Games in Atlanta; 1993, KidSports Person of the Year by the KidSports Foundation; 1989, Sullivan Award Winner for top U.S. amateur athlete; 1989, Named Sportswoman of the Year by the United States Olympic Committee; 1991, 1990, 1989, 1987, Selected American Swimmer of the Year; and 1987-1990, Selected World Swimmer of the Year by Swimming World Magazine
Evans retired in 1996 to become a coach, broadcaster, and speaker. She is very active in charity work and hosts the annual Janet Evans Invitational Swim Meet. Evans was born in California on April 28, 1971. She currently resides in Colorado.
