STEPHANIE READY
FIRST FEMALE COACH IN NBA HISTORY
Stephanie Ready is the first woman to coach in a men’s professional basketball league.
Ready was named an assistant coach of the Greenville Groove, which is part of the National Basketball Development League, the NBA’s new minor league which tips off in November.
“This is a unique and challenging opportunity,” Ready said. “Not only am I part of the launch of his new league, but I have the opportunity to help basketball players reach their full potential and develop my coaching skills as a member of the NBA family.”
The 25-year-old Ready has spent the last two seasons as an assisant for the men’s basketball team at Coppin State. She was the only female full-time recruiting assistant on staff of a men’s Division I program last year.
Ready was hired as Coppin State’s women’s volleyball coach in 1998 after graduating from the school and joined the men’s basketball team in 1999.
“Coach Ready knows the game of basketball, has a proven track record at the collegiate level of helping players develop their skills and comes highly recommended,” Groove coach Milton Barnes said.
Ready was a four-year starter on the Coppin State women’s basketball team after walking on as a freshman. She finished her career ranked among the school’s all-time top 10 in points, rebounds, assists and steals.
