GENEVIEVE GORDER
HOST, TLC’S TOWN HALL
Genevieve Gorder’s frequent barefoot approach to design drives her reputation as a free-spirited designer who takes chances with big payoffs. Her unmistakable allure and charm inspire homeowners to first reveal things about themselves — family, friends and memorable moments — prior to designing a room. For Genevieve, inspiration for design is never a question of why but, why not?
Experiential, eclectic and whimsical, Genevieve finds inspiration and beauty in everyday life — and then applies it to the rooms she designs, often finding one signature object and building her design around it. Some of her “found” inspirational objects include a steaming bowl of Tom-Ka-Gai soup, a trip to Morocco and an artichoke, to name a few.
Viewers may recognize Genevieve as one of the designers on TLC’s hit series Trading Spaces. Genevieve is one of the popular show’s original cast members, beginning in 2000 and still appearing in episodes today.
Born and raised in Minneapolis, Genevieve is the eldest of three siblings, including two younger brothers, Lewis and Adrian.
Genevieve graduated from the School of Visual Arts in Manhattan with a B.F.A. in graphic design. An internship at MTV turned into a full-time position, but her love of design drew her to studios in Amsterdam, Barcelona and next to the award-winning studio Duffy Design in New York. Genevieve’s artistic side continued to flourish and she quickly went from one- to three-dimensional graphic design, working on everything from corporate identities and packaging to fine arts and fashion.
Genevieve’s rooms all embody a lasting touch of her free spirit. Her biggest pet peeve is the country that she thinks America is quickly becoming … “Beigeland, one nation void of color.” Some of her most memorable rooms reflect her unusual choices of raw materials. From tin ceilings and broken-dish backsplashes to her moss-covered wall, the world is one big art store.
Genevieve currently resides in Manhattan and works as a designer on various projects through her company, gg Studios.
You can find her work just about anywhere, from a bottle of Tanqueray 10 to a line of illustrated greeting cards, a line of blue jeans and even a kitchen in a home near you.
She has made frequent media appearances, including the Today Show, Good Day New York, YM magazine, Lucky magazine and many more.
