BOB ROTELLA
SPORTS PSYCHOLOGIST
Dr. Bob Rotella didn’t invent sports psychology, but with his name mentioned almost every other week by a victorious tour pro, you might think he did.
Rotella has clearly mastered the art form as it applies to the tee shot over water and the three-foot putt. And it all started quite accidentally. Rotella had played golf only occasionally 20 years ago when he was asked to speak about the mental side of the game before a Golf Digest panel of teachers and players. Among those in attendance were Bob Toski, Paul Runyan, Davis Love Jr., Peter Kostis, Jim Flick, Cary Middlecoff and Sam Snead. Warned several times that Snead would immediately shoot down everything he had to say, Rotella was not surprised when the first hand up at the conclusion of his remarks was Snead’s. But Snead simply said, “I hate to think how many U.S. Opens I would have won if I had heard someone a long time ago say some of the things you just said.”
Today, Rotella, who was director of sports psychology at the University of Virginia from 1976-’96, is a self-made scratch golfer.
