GEORGE J. MITCHELL

FORMER U.S. SENATOR AND RESPECTED DIPLOMAT

George J. Mitchell, one of the country’s top political speakers, was appointed to the United States Senate in 1980 to complete the unexpired term of Senator Edmund S. Muskie. Mitchell left the Senate in 1995 as the Senate Majority Leader, a position he had held since January 1989. Recently, he served as Chairman of the Peace Negotiations in Northern Ireland. His leadership there has earned him worldwide praise. During his tenure, Senator Mitchell enjoyed bipartisan respect , and it has been said, “There is not a man, woman or child in the Capitol who does not trust George Mitchell.” For six consecutive years he was voted “the most respected member” of the Senate.

Senator Mitchell is also the author of three books. With his colleague, Senator Bill Cohen of Maine, he wrote Men of Zeal, describing the Iran-Contra investigation. In 1990, Senator Mitchell wrote his second book, World on Fire, describing the threat of the green house effect and recommending steps to curb it. His third book, was Not For America Alone: The Triumph of Democracy and The Fall of Communism. Most recently Senator Mitchell released Making Peace, a first hand account of the Northern Ireland Peace Agreement.

Sen. Mitchell’s speeches are crafted to fit each situation. The breadth of his experience is such that he is comfortable speaking about a wide variety of domestic and global issues, including: America’s foreign policy; finance; taxes; health care; Medicare; welfare reform; education; the environment; and the peace accords in Northern Ireland.
