ROBERT WUHL

HOST, HBO: ASSUME THE POSITION

As an actor, Robert Wuhl has been critically praised for his work in films such as “Bull Durham,” “Batman,” “Good Morning, Vietnam,” “Mistress” and “Cobb.”

He’s worked beside some of the finest actors: Jack Nicholson, Paul Newman, Kevin Costner, Tommy Lee Jones, and Robert DeNiro, and such notable directors as Tim Burton, Ron Shelton, Richard Donner, and Barry Levinson. In 1996 he wrote, directed and starred in his own independent feature, “Open Season.”

Wuhl has been hailed as “one of the best comic actors in movies” by Peter Rainer. As a filmmaker he has been compared to Capra, Sturges, Chayefsky and Woody Allen. Wuhl has twice been honored with Emmy Awards—in ’91 and ’92 for his contributions to writing the Academy Awards telecasts hosted by Billy Crystal.

As a comedian, he starred in the HBO Comedy Hour titled, “Robert Wuhl’s World Tour.” Pushing the envelope, the revue-styled show made use of animation and special visual effects to underscore the stories Wuhl told on stage. He has performed and been involved with Comic Relief from its start.

Also on HBO, a guest Starring role on the very first episode of “Tales From the Crypt,” directed by Richard Donner, led to a Cable ACE nomination for Wuhl as Best Actor in a Dramatic Series.

As a kid growing up in Union, New Jersey he went to the movies often and idolized the talents behind the camera, rather than the actors, which is now showing its influence. “My heroes were people like Billy Wilder, Stanley Kramer, Neil Simon and Woody Allen,” he recalls. “I always wanted to produce and direct – I never thought of performing.” Now he does it all.

Despite his rich and varied background, Wuhl refuses to see himself as a Hollywood hyphenate, and refers to himself only as a “storyteller.” He shuns the notion of developing a philosophy about his craft. “Let’s just say ‘Work is Good.’ I try to be a craftsman, to work consistently, and to produce a body of work which will be respected by my peers, and hopefully, the public.”

He does allow himself a few other pleasures during his rare free time: an occasional round of golf, traveling to Paris with is wife and dog and Rotisseries Baseball.

But the question is: What is free time anymore?
