DR. JOHN RUTLEDGE
BUSH ADMINISTRATION ADVISOR
An advisor to the Bush administration on both the dividend tax cut and rebuilding Iraq, Dr. John Rutledge is chairperson of the Rutledge Institute for Capital & Growth, which is organized to promote economic growth and prosperity through research and education. Dr. Rutledge also is chairperson of Rutledge Capital, a private equity investment firm. Additionally, Dr. Rutledge chairs Rutledge Research, an economic advisory firm, and is chair of the advisory boards of B.V. Group, a venture capital hedge fund and real estate investment firm, and Saugatuck Capital, a private equity firm. During 1980-81, Dr. Rutledge served as a member of the Reagan transition team as one of the principal architects of the Reagan Economic Plan.
Dr. Rutledge is the founder of Claremont Economics Institute (CEI), an economic advisory business in Claremont, California. As CEI’s chair for twenty years, he worked in dozens of countries advising CEOs on business, financial, and restructuring strategies. Dr. Rutledge’s “Asset Market Shift” framework for analyzing capital markets, in which interest rates and other asset prices are determined by private arbitrage behavior, was first introduced in The Wall Street Journal in the 1980s. Over the past twenty years, he has used this framework in economic analysis, asset allocation, portfolio selection, business strategy, restructuring, acquisitions, and divestitures.
Dr. Rutledge writes a regular column in the American Spectator on the intersection of ideas from science and economics. He has written the “Business Strategy” column in Forbes for more than a decade and writes weekly columns for Forbes.com and TheStreet.com. He has also written hundreds of articles for numerous publications. Dr. John Rutledge has testified before many Congressional committees and has advised government officials in the U.S., U.K., Ireland, and Kuwait.
Dr. John Rutledge has an active lecture practice, giving talks on global economics, financial markets, investment strategies, the impact of technology on the economy, and strategies for owning and growing the value of a business. Among his clients are General Electric, Boeing, Forbes, Fortune, AIG, Fidelity, Franklin/Templeton Funds, National Association of Federal Credit Unions, Young Presidents Organization, Association for Corporate Growth, National Association of Manufacturers, Turner Construction, Kuwait Fund, Bobbin Forum, Aluminum Extruders Institute, American Petroleum Institute, Toyota, Edison Institute, New York Society of Security Analysts, Bankhaus Metzler, Lazard Freres, and many others.
Dr. John Rutledge began his career on the faculty at Tulane University and Claremont McKenna College, where he taught monetary economics, international finance, and econometrics. Dr. Rutledge holds a Bachelor of Arts degree from Lake Forest College, and a Ph.D. from the University of Virginia. He has a passion for mathematics, physics, complex adaptive systems, cognitive science, history, music, and speaks several languages.
